Marvel At These Minimalist Superhero Posters

Graphic designer Marko Manev has a large and growing collection of minimalist tributes to Marvel superheros; from the Incredible Hulk to Magneto, many of the greats are here. The posters have a nice folded and worn look to them, as if they once proudly symbolized support for their namesake on some imaginary street corner. Captain America!

A couple weeks ago, during the LA Times Hero Complex Film Festival, the marketing people at Marvel released a limited-edition retro poster for Captain America: The First Avenger, and I absolutely loved it. Taking advantage of the missed opportunity by X-Men: First Class earlier this summer, it was a ridiculously cool design and it’s a true shame it won’t be getting spread around much. Now Marvel has released a new one-sheet and, sadly, it’s lacking that awesome retro vibe.

The new artwork is cool and uber-patriotic (as it should be) but it’s just not as cool as it could be. What is interesting is that it’s bordering that very fine line between way too much Photoshop and a hand-drawn appearance, but it’s falling more on the wrong side. It’s not a terrible poster, but it also can’t be their best idea.

The best poster for Captain America: The First Avenger is one you won’t be seeing in theaters. As part of the LA Times Hero Complex Film Festival over the weekend, Marvel Studios printed 100 copies of a vintage-inspired Cap poster to give away to the audience on hand for the Sunday Marvel presentation. It’s designed like a poster for Casablanca or an old World War II movie, and much like this classic comic book cover, features Cap punching Hitler in the face. We can only hope Chris Evans gets to do the same thing in the actual movie. Check out the poster below.

Joe Stone [Infographics] Marvel!



Graphic designer Joe Stone has completed his trilogy of Marvel Comics infographics with the Avengers Family Tree. As he has already done with the X-Men and and the Fantastic Four, Stone traces the familial, sexual and clonal relationship of one comics’ most beloved super-teams. Beyond their excellent designs, Stone’s infographics have also inspired great debates about the years of subplots, alternate realities and retroactive continuities that make the existence of these family trees all the more impressive.

New Spidey?

 

CULVER CITY, Calif., Feb. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Columbia Pictures announced today that the title of the next Spider-Man film will be The Amazing Spider-Man.

The studio simultaneously released a photo of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, the first shot of Garfield in the famous full mask and suit.

The film, which is now in production and is being shot entirely in 3D, will be released on July 3, 2012. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the Marvel Entertainment production for Columbia Pictures. The executive producers are Stan Lee, Kevin Feige, and Michael Grillo.
